TAMIL LANGUAGE

DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVES:

• To ensure every student develop skills of a confident and effective communicator for the Tamil Language.
• To enhance language learning through an integrated approach towards ICT based lessons & other learning techniques.
• To make learning of Tamil  language relevant by promoting the richness of its values & cultural heritage.

MISSION

To develop students into confident, collaborative and curious learners  through Ability driven approach catering to different passions and talents/skills of the students and thus developing creative thinkers and lifelong learners.

TEACHING APPROACHES

A variety of learning approaches and activities are organized, designed and taught to develop proficient users who can communicate effectively using the language in real-life contexts and apply it in inter-personal communication, so as to make TL directly relevant to students and a living language. Such activities include more performance-based tasks (show-n-tell, story-telling, poetry recital, group work, role play and games).  

We leverage on our students’ familiarity and regular use of ICT for TL learning. There is greater use of ICT platforms such as SLS, IMTL and Vaandu to create realistic, interactive settings that test students’ ability to use the language effectively and meaningfully.

Holistic Assessment (HA) - ongoing feedback to learners on how the can improve their learning. Formative approaches (e.g. skilful questioning techniques, regular and timely feedback, parking lots, self and peer assessment) are integrated into everyday teaching and learning to help enhance students’ learning.

INDOOR & OUTDOOR CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES:

Lessons come alive and it’s full of fun over at Montfort Junior School! An immersive language environment is offered to enable students to learn Tamil with confidence and joy.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMMES:

These programmes are based on the vast richness of the Tamil Literature. The boys read and understand the texts, and they practice their learning during the performance. They have a deeper understanding of the CHRISTE values in these literary texts, which allows them to apply the values in their daily lives. Through these programmes students build their self-confidence and talents.

BI MTL WEEK ACTIVITIES:

Activities held during Bi-MT week creates an immersive and meaningful environment for the students to learn and appreciate Tamil Language. Students are exposed to culture and values which will enhance their learning experience and inspire their interest in Tamil Language. It also provides platforms with authentic settings for the students to associate and experience the culture. The fortnight activities help to instill in students the Joy of Learning Tamil Language and knowing its rich tradition.

LEARNING JOURNEY:

Learning journeys take the pupils’ learning beyond the classroom. Through LJs, pupils get the chance to experience authentic learning beyond the classroom.

Pongal Festival Learning Journey
Every year the P4 Tamil students will go to Little India for Ponggal Festival. They take part in hands-on activities like thoranam- weaving,Vetti tying and folk dance, Uri adithal etc. It is an informative and fun-filled journey for the students to understand Indian culture.

Reading Programme - Share A Story
All Tamil students form P1-P6 are engaged in a once weekly Library period in class. Students read Tamil storybooks and are given opportunities to share their favourite stories with their classmates. These story sharing sessions enable students to develop a love for reading Tamil books and build their confidence when they present their stories to their classmates. This boost in confidence could possibly channel itself into the students’ other key learning areas academically and non-academically.

External Competitions
Montfortians take part in various internal and external competitions which include singing, essay writing, storytelling, debate etc. These competitions provide them with a platform to showcase their talents and boost their confidence.
